It has occurred to me recently that there are a few types of music that I enjoy listening to, but very rarely hear because I don't actually own any of it. Therefore, I'm looking for suggestions of albums to pick up to cover a few genres. So if any of you out there in LJ-land are a fan of one of these genres and know a good album to fill a hole in a music collection, speak up.

In no particular order:

Swing
Punk
Blues
Ska

Is that an album, a band, or both?

I'm thinking more towards what they're calling the third wave.

So should I just pick one of their albums at random then?

Besides Jimi, do those bands have only one album out?

Benny Goodman is a contemporary of Duke Ellington, Count Basie, etc. There's alot out, just look for a greatest hits thing.

Me First has, I think, 2 albums out. Check the first one for punkish covers of old 50's songs.

Yeah, but uh don't look them up at work. Their subject matter is vile.

Punk - No Use For A Name, Lagwagon.. I guess both could be considered "light punk", but, they were some of my favorite bands when I started out in the genre.

Ska - Less Than Jake, though cliche, I still listen to them every once in a while. The Mad Caddies had a couple good songs, not that I remember the names of the good ones...

Punk and ska are two of my favorite genres. These will not necessarily be what I consider to be the my favorite of their respective genres, but they are influential and/or easy to find. And all very good. They are Band, Album.

Ska: The Specials, The Specials. The English Beat, I Just Can't Stop It. Operation Ivy, Energy.

Punk: The Clash, London Calling. The Sex Pistols, Nevermind the Bollocks. Sleater-Kinney, One Beat.
